Why should casino workers be made exceptions to safety laws? Shall we go back to allowing asbestos in the workplace? Remove all safety measures to limit black lung in coal miners? Where do you want to draw the line? Or do you all prefer to keep living in the gilded age?
I have to say I'd definitely visit casinos more often if they weren't smoke filled. I certainly can't imagine having to work there.
They knew that gamblers smoked before they took the job. If they want to work is someplace "healthier," they should quit.
c'mon ok I dont smoke I used to years ago BUT ITS A CASINO! Its not a health club if I apply for a job at a casino I might have to in hale smoke....how about the second hand carbon dioxide i get from you driving your car ( which they have shown leaves spots on the lungs)...On the job Hazard the same risk an Iron worker takes everyday when he goes to work.....Vegas that cant smoke Please...
I agree, Dave. We're slowly becoming a nanny state catering to those who whine the loudest. If you don't like your working conditions then by all means move on and create a much needed job opening.
What should be required is some sort of air filtering or way to protect the dealers while at the same time allowing patrons to smoke.
I am not a smoker, but we all know that gambling, smoking and drinking are a coupled collection and if you take away the right here somewhere else is going to offer it, thus making the law moot. Take away one and someone else will offer it.
Imagine the casinos smoke free. Fewer tourists for certain. Enough of them already!! It took me almost an hour to drive down the strip during the day because of all the tourists!! Get rid of them and all our budget problems would disappear. In fact, tear down the casinos and do away with gambling. It is unsightly and a moral blight on our community. People will still visit Las Vegas to enjoy the wonderful, calming summer heat. They will hike the nearby deserts and canyons. Lake Mead and Boulder Dam can absorb the masses.
The study actually states,
"NP casino dealers reported higher prevalence of respiratory symptoms compared to administrative and engineering employees, but the differences in the prevalence between the groups were not statistically significant."
Translation: There was no statistically significant difference in respiratory symptoms between those who worked in the smoking areas and those who worked in the non-smoking areas.
Every casino employee knew when they applied for their job that there is smoking in a casino. They made the choice to work in that environment.
Smoke from tobacco in a decently ventilated area is a statistically insignificant health risk
"Every casino employee knew when they applied for their job that there is smoking in a casino. They made the choice to work in that environment." And every single smoker knows that cigarettes kill but that doesn't stop the courts from granting huge judgements to the families of people who die from smoking. I'm betting within 5 years there will be a court case and the casinos will ban smoking.
It is interesting to me that 58% of the people in the poll say ban smoking and yet almost all the comments are against it. I wonder why.
