Observations from Saturday’s Crown Royal 400 at Richmond International Raceway

Kyle Busch better hightail it back to his hometown of Las Vegas and enlist the protective services of several wise guys if he wants to save himself from the wrath of an angry Junior Nation. Regardless of whether or not Kyle was to blame for denying Dale Jr. his chance at his first win in 71 races, the army of Dale Jr. fans will hold Kyle responsible. Imagine how furious Junior Nation would have been if Kyle had taken the checkered flag.

Denny Hamlin set the record for the most laps led in a race at Richmond. He was out front for 381 of the 400 laps. It looked like he had the checkered flag in his pocket until he was cheated out of a win by an uncooperative right front tire. Once the tire was flat, Denny stayed on the track longer than he should have which eventually brought out the caution. The wreck between Dale Jr. and Kyle happened after the restart. I wonder if the outcome of the race might have been different for Dale Jr. if Denny had decide to pit earlier, which would have allowed the green flag to continue to fly.

Did you see the replay of the wreck between Michael Waltrip and Casey Mears? At first it looked like Michael’s car was superglued to the rear of Casey’s machine after their wreck. But once you heard the audio of the replay, it was very clear that Michael jumped on the gas and intentionally used the nose of his car as a snowplow. NASCAR made the right call when it decided to park Waltrip for the remainder of the race.

What will make the black cloud hanging over Kurt Busch disappear? He has had an unremarkable season so far which includes two consecutive DNFs. If there’s anyone who deserves a break, it’s Kurt.

Will tonight’s race only serve to intensify the rivalry between Dale Jr. and Kyle Busch? I hope so.

Below is the video of the controversial wreck involving Dale Jr. and Kyle.

  1. Did they replay the audio from Mikey's car on TV? Or was I in too many bottles of fine Northwest craft brew to notice?

  2. Waltrip's car had an in-car camera and you could hear the engine race as he drove into the back of Casey.

  3. Ah, I did hear that. I was hoping there might be a tirade of some kind.

  4. Maybe it's time for Kurt to try and get out of his contract like he did with Roush?

  5. Exactly what the heck is the 'Junior Nation' anyhow? How come they rule the sport? If he was Gilbert Jones Jr. would anyone notice him? Dale Jr. is a pretty good wheel-man, but he's one of many, and I don't think he has whatever it was that his father had.

Though Jr. wasn't crying, his 'Nation' was. NASCAR is slipping downward from winners to whiners, as you have noted previously.

When you race cars you bump into each other now and then. Long live the Shrub.

  6. Just checked the poll results on NASCAR.com. The question is 'Who most DESERVED to win Saturday at Richmond?' The answer (73,205 voters at that time): Denny Hamlin 41%, Clint Bowyer 6%, Kyle Busch 3%, Dale Earnhardt Jr. 50%!! I guess that answers my own question!

  7. Fancan - If you watched the post-race interview, Junior seemed pretty close to crying, too.

I like how someone said Junior Nation was shaking their fists at Busch. I saw a lot of arms outstretched, but I didn't see any completely closed fists...

  8. Dale Jr's dad used to say of that unclosed fist: "I'm just telling him he's No.1"

  9. The only driver who ever "deserves" to win is the one who crosses the finish line first.

  10. Thanks for posting the YouTube video Mike, I hadn't got there yet. What I heard was DW, older brother of NASCAR's very own buffoon, crying about the wreck. Sounded like he must have had money on Junior. What I saw (from Bowyer's camera) was Kyle hold his line and Jr. come down on him. But that's just my opinion!

  11. Kyle Wildman Busch got loose and he just straigthen himself out by using Dale Jr.

    That is what happened.

It was Kyle Wildman Busch does not know how to race in that situation.

It was a lack of skills problem.

Next time, he will know to back off and try again in the next lap.

  12. Hmmm jfnance, is that how the racing is where you come from? Kyle did exactly what he was paid to do, RACE. I hear the Jr Nation is already calling for all his fans to boycott M*M's.

  13. Kyle was too hot when he came into the corner and his car got loose. It was just competitive racing. If this had happened on lap 12, then Kyle would have been a jerk.

  14. To jfnance32: Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!
