A 21-year Metro Police veteran has been identified as the off-duty officer who shot and wounded a man earlier this week outside the Excalibur. Metro today said Bernard Blaskett, 54, opened fire on Saul Villegas, 27, who allegedly climbed into the officer’s personal vehicle Sunday night in a loading zone outside the Strip venue.

The death of a man whose body was found in a trash bin on Monday has been ruled a homicide, the Clark County Coroner’s Office reported. he victim was identified as Carl Pane Simon, 50. He died of asphyxiation and blunt head trauma.

Things are going swimmingly for the growing population of a tiny, endangered fish that is only found in Clark County. In a Tuesday press release, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said the Moapa dace's population is improving. According to the USFWS, there are 1,727 Moapa dace in the world, 501 more than they found in February.

Ecologists are worried the Mount Charleston wildfire might just snuff out a species of butterflies known only to exist in the upper reaches of the Spring Mountains. The Mount Charleston blue butterfly already has been proposed for inclusion on the federal endangered species list. The wildfire may push the iridescent blue butterflies whose wingspan reaches only up to 1 inch onto the brink of extinction.

A relieving bout of summer rain has prompted Clark County to downgrade an air-quality alert to an advisory. In a news release Thursday, Clark County spokesman Erik Pappa said the combination of moisture in the atmosphere and a change in directional flow has led to a decrease in smoke levels in the Las Vegas Valley caused by the wildfire on Mount Charleston.

Clad in a vest resembling the American flag, Robin Reese was the embodiment of American patriotism with her red lips, bright white smile and sparks in her clear blue eyes. Boulder City residents lovingly knew Reese, whose favorite holiday was the Fourth of July, as the “Jug Lady.” She acquired the nickname because she would place jugs around the city to collect donations for the Damboree, the town's annual Independence Day celebration. Sadly, she died in December after combating a number of ailments for years. But her dedication to the holiday won't be forgotten soon by Boulder City.
