Without the fashion students at the International Academy of Design and Technology in Henderson, Jade Jones wouldn’t be going to her senior prom on May 13.
Jones, her mother and two sisters “lost everything” while living in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina, she said. They moved to Las Vegas in 2005, and Jones has worked hard as a student at West Prep. She’s positioned herself to be the school’s valedictorian in June. But until January, Jones thought she’d have to miss the most traditional of high school traditions — the prom — because she couldn’t afford a dress.

That was the conclusion of a national transportation research group that released a report Wednesday outlining the top 40 transportation projects that would support economic growth in Nevada. Call it a wish list for the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada, which unveiled the study’s findings.

Inside Ri Ra’s Irish Pub at Mandalay Place, Ciaran Sheehan has erected a tribute to his homeland. Salvaged memorabilia, even whole bars, were imported from all over Ireland, and its exterior façade could have been plucked from a Dublin sidewalk. The heavy oak doors opened into a musty, but jovial, scene on Thursday: Friends toasted each other, dressed in holiday garb, and a fiddle player cut a traditional Irish tune somewhere in the back. “We’re hoping it’s as if people were walking in from the street,” Sheehan said. The pub held its grand opening appropriately on St. Patrick’s Day, marked by a green-speckled parade through the mall Thursday morning.
