Taylor, who covers UNLV sports, is a 2010 graduate of the William Allen White School of Journalism at the University of Kansas. He worked for newspapers in Iowa, Kansas and Missouri before moving out to the desert, working seven months on the sports desk at the Arizona Republic before joining the Sun in November 2011. His outside passions include good books, bad coffee and the search for adequate leg room.

It takes about 20 minutes to travel from Tony Sanchez’s present to his past, something he did Friday for the first time since leaving Bishop Gorman High to become the 11th football coach in UNLV history. The accomplishment that brought him back felt much further away than that trek or the four and a half months ticked off on the calendar.

The vast majority of the work the Rebels have accomplished in the spring will be complete by the time the vast majority of the public will first set eyes on coach Tony Sanchez’s first team at UNLV. That’s by design, because while no time on the practice field is without its benefits, Saturday’s Spring Showcase is more about continuing the program’s positive offseason outreach and trying to transfer the energy from the practice fields to the fans than perfecting the systems the Rebels have spent more than a month working on.

From the time the preseason was really churning at Bishop Gorman High at the end of July to UNLV’s spring break last week, UNLV coach Tony Sanchez guessed that he hadn’t spent two straight days without working. So while there’s still a mountain of work left to be done before Sanchez coaches his first college game, enjoying some time away from the offices was a priority for the entire coaching staff.

Christian Wood scored 28 points with seven rebounds to lead UNLV into Thursday's quarterfinals with a 67-46 victory this afternoon against UNR at the Thomas & Mack Center. UNLV, the No. 7 seed, will meet No. 2 seed San Diego State at 6 p.m. Thursday.
