this is yet another law enforcement agency knee jerk reaction whenever there is a problem or scandal. Would converting over to an independent lab be any better? They make mistakes too. The same Analysts that are working now will be working at the independent lab. The differences would be who and what governing body would in control of their oversight? The DA/Public Defenders Office, A civilian committee?
The important part is that a mistake was found and is being addressed, with transparency, not covered up.
For more examples of this, google San Francisco crime lab, California DOJ Ripon lab, Houston Tx, Detroit, and last but not least, The Oklahoma City lab. These labs had real problems.
