Alexant:
Loved your Home Improvement analogy. I -- and others (like Chancellor Jim Rogers) -- believe if you were running the football program like a business that it would have been put into mothballs long ago. The reason it won't be cut, other than the one johnvegas notes, is that football is still one of two sports at UNLV that potentially could make money, given the right set of circumstances. That's why most schools have a football team. Still, you gotta have an English department, and with money from Carson City drying up, a four- or five-season -- combined with the interest it might generate -- might keep the bean counters at bay a little longer.

I interviewed Dan Gurney for a story on the old Stardust Raceway in Las Vegas I wrote several years ago. When I brought up Swede's name, you could still hear the emotion in his voice. Class act, that Gurney. I also read about the tainted blood Swede received, and how it shut down his kidneys. What can you say? Fate can be so very cruel, and I guess all you can do is pick up what's left and try to move on. Thanks for the kind words. I'm still getting e-mail from Swede's fans a week later. The response has been pretty overwhelming.
Thanks to all you guys (and so many others who replied directly to my e-mail) for the kind words. It's really touching that so many remember Swede after all these years.
Mike: Then you surely know how I feel. There is a green diecast Lotus sitting on one of my book shelves at home. It is the car Jim drove during the 1963 F-1 season.
Thanks for the kind words. I have heard from a lot of Swede's fans and it's nice to know that others still remember ...
Capitol: I hear ya'. I was at the NCAA Tournament in Omaha when a bunch of K-State fans brought their coolers right into the lobby of the Hilton and started drinking from them. (I don't blame them. They were asking $5 for a Bud Light at the hotel bar.) Security was summoned, and two guards told those K-State fans to take those coolers to Council Bluffs. I think they were KU fans.:-)
True, where's your sense of humor? Beat Idaho!
"A River Runs Through It" is mentioned on the list of movies made in or near Great Falls. My bad for not saying the movie was made "near" there. But the coaches say you can still fly fish in Great Falls. Or near there.
Before the ACC (and others) pushed the MWC onto Tuesday and Wednesday and Friday and Doomsday, MWC coaches were complaining about playing on Thursday. Remember the dreaded "short week?" So were some ADs and a lot of fans. I believe this may have been what Craig T. was referring to.
Actually, I enjoyed the KBL Draft. I enjoy any event where the agents don't dress any better than I do. :)
But I must confess I had never been to the Renaissance before Saturday. Maybe it it were called Renaissance Station, I might be a regular.
Or maybe I need to get out more often ...

Rocket: Thanks to you -- and all -- for pointing that out. Next time when the Discovery Channel is own, I promise to pay more attention.

Same here (about missing the thunderboats). Not sure if there would be any interest in bringing them back, tho. We need a smaller lake or river that comes equipped with a windshield. But the summer just isn't the same around here without Miss Bud, Miss Circus Circus, the Winston Eagle and a king-sized wad of Oh Boy! Oberto to chew on.
