Just 24 hours after The Mirage headliner Terry Fator signed off on divorce papers with his wife Melinda on Tuesday afternoon, he married Taylor Makakoa, his girlfriend of 18 months. The ceremony attended by the mothers of the bride and the groom took place downtown at the Lily of the Valley wedding chapel.
This weekend, they will make it completely official with a Hawaiian minister performing a traditional Hawaiian wedding ceremony here, again with Taylor’s mom Nani Dew and Terry’s mom Marie, who had flown in from Texas this week.
In his very first interview today about the marriage, the America’s Got Talent Season 2 champion and $100 million Strip entertainer told me: “We wanted you to know because today we now both have on our wedding rings, and somebody is going to spill the secret, so we wanted you to hear it directly from us.”
Taylor, who appears nightly in Terry’s singing impressions show at The Mirage, added: “I’m already getting used to saying ‘my husband!’ I’m having a lot of fun saying ‘my husband.’ ”
They kept their 2-week-old engagement secret from everybody after Terry gave Taylor the ring. I’d rumored the pending wedding in our Wicked Whispers & Racy Rumors column notes two weeks ago as lawyers for Terry and Melinda, who he’d been married to for 18 years, were working on the divorce.
Only when those documents were finally signed Tuesday -- two months before Terry and Melinda would have marked a 20-year marriage -- and the final legal obstacles cleared away was Wednesday’s ceremony given the green light. Vegas DeLuxe confirmed Terry and Melinda’s divorce yesterday.
The couple has been dating since July last year -- about 18 months. “We simply couldn’t wait anymore. Obviously, we’d talked about it before, but Wednesday morning, I just said, “We’re now able to marry, so let’s just go get married, and so we dragged ourselves right down to the wedding chapel with our mothers. They are both very happy for us getting married. They approve and blessed us.”
Terry beamed to me. “She is my soul mate. We are deliriously happy to spend the rest of our lives together.”
Terry won the $1 million prize on AGT, which landed him a series of guest shows at the Las Vegas Hilton before signing a 10-year, $100 million contract at The Mirage.
He candidly admitted: “We are looking forward to having children together and building a family and future here in Las Vegas.”
