New Miss America Laura Kaeppeler of Kenosha, Wisc., is on her way to Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on Feb. 5, and NFL officials sent the first of the official footballs to her for this Tom Donoghue photo. Laura will host the 21st annual food fundraiser Taste of the NFL as one of her first duties in her new reign (bummer about her Green Bay Packers on Sunday, as the defending Super Bowl champions were upset by the New York Giants).
Chefs from each of the NFL cities will serve taste treats to sports fans and high rollers on the eve of Super Bowl Sunday to raise funds for nationwide food banks. Chef Bobby Flay (Mesa Grill in Caesars Palace) will represent his hometown New York Giants (and Jets).
The “Party With a Purpose” was founded by 2010 James Beard Humanitarian of the Year Wayne Kostroski, who flew to Las Vegas for the Saturday night crowning of the 2012 Miss America at Planet Hollywood. He started the Taste of the NFL in 1992, and the event has to date distributed more than $11 million to local and national food banks.
At last year’s Taste of the NFL in Dallas, I took part in the champagne saber-off with 2011 Miss America Teresa Scanlan. This year, multiplatinum country singer Sara Evans will headline at the Taste of the NFL concert. The Super Bowl will be played in New Orleans next year and in New York in 2014.
