Rocker Sammy Hagar had only hours to spend in Las Vegas between two out-of-town concert dates -- arriving from Houston and headed to Portland, Ore. -- for his tour with Chickenfoot. The brief visit here was jam-packed, to say the least; he even spent from midnight to 2 a.m. taking a tour of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health after Friday’s concert at The Joint in the Hard Rock Hotel, where a memorabilia case honoring the group was dedicated.
But the big news came when he announced that the third annual Vegas Rocks Magazine Awards honoring Whitesnake’s David Coverdale and him is Aug. 26 at The Joint. The night before, Sammy hosts a Surf Beach Rum Party for 300 fans, and Sammy promises to play bartender before hopping onstage to perform.
Vegas Rocks Publisher Sally Steele, who hosts the awards, celebrates her magazine’s 8th anniversary presenting Sammy with the Voice of Rock Award and the Lifetime Achievement in Rock ’n’ Roll Award to David. Top chart rockers and Las Vegas bands are set for the red-carpet festivities. You can view video highlights of the past two VRMAs at VegasRocksTV.com.
Sammy told me: “It is a real honor for me, and doubly so because it’s right here in my adopted home of Las Vegas. It’s going to be an extraordinary night.” Sammy also wound up at “Iron Chef” winner and pal Kerry Simon’s KGB (Kerry’s Gourmet Burgers) in Harrah’s to celebrate its second anniversary; we’ll have that coverage Tuesday.
Sammy also greeted fans and diners at his Cabo Wabo Cantina in Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops. He spent an hour making his way around the restaurant and outdoor patio posing for photographs, signing autographs and taking a break with his own Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum with a toasted colada to help cool down from the 100-degree temperature.
Sally told me: “With appearances by some of the most famous rock artists in the music industry, this will truly be a night to remember for rock ’n’ roll fans. The event will be filmed live for VegasRocksTV.com. The event will focus on the local Las Vegas rock scene, as well as rock legends past and present.”
The awards are sponsored by Vince Neil’s Girls, Girls, Girls, KISS by Monster Mini Golf and Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum. Tickets are $26 and may be purchased starting today at the Hard Rock Hotel Box office (800-693-ROCK) or by calling Ticketmaster at 1-800-745-3000. For more information, go to VegasRocksTV.com.
