Danny Avila Breaking Your Fall
At age 18, many teens are about to graduate from high school and enter college. Newly 18-year-old Danny Avila, who hails from and is based in Spain, is about to DJ at Hakkasan Las Vegas, what is now the largest nightclub on the Strip at 80,000 square feet, in its sneak preview opening weekend.
Five questions via email from Los Angeles with the kid who really is a kid (emoticons and three exclamation points -- !!! -- are allowed because he’s, like, young):
Congratulations on being the youngest Strip DJ resident. How did it come about?
Thank you. Actually, some of the guys who are running Hakkasan saw me play at some of my shows, and thanks God they liked it a lot ;). So we started talking, and here we go ;). Honestly, I am so happy about this, you can’t imagine. I mean the whole resident lineup they have is just crazy, and I am sure Hakkasan will be the next level of clubbing in Las Vegas!
You can legally drink in your homeland of Spain. Will it be strange not to be able to at Hakkasan Las Vegas?
I turned 18 last week, so, for me, it’s not common to drink while I’m playing. To be really honest, I don’t care at all if I can drink or not. For me, the most important thing is to make a good show, that people have fun and of course that I have fun.
What are you looking forward to in your residency at MGM Grand Las Vegas?
It’s the biggest residency that I’ve had so far. I haven’t been to the club yet -- my first show is [Saturday] -- and I’m more than excited!!! I’ve heard from so many people that the club is amazing, so I’m sure it’s gonna be a great year for Hakkasan and all the people involved! Everyone I’ve met from the Hakkasan team so far are great people, so I am so excited to be part of this team!
I’m looking forward to pretty much everything. It’s impossible not to have fun in Las Vegas. I’m playing a lot of headline shows, which I’m really happy about, but I’m also playing support shows for my friend Tiesto, as well as with Tommy Trash, Nervo, Dada Life and so many others. So I just can’t wait!
Have you been to Las Vegas before? If so, what do you like about Las Vegas?
I’ve been to Las Vegas a couple of times already! What I like most about Las Vegas is the vibe. It’s all about having fun. People go there just to enjoy and go crazy for some days. That’s simply great. You can easily see it on the dance floor!!! I also like all the crazy pool parties in Las Vegas, so I also am very excited about my shows at Wet Republic starting in May.
Who are your favorite artists in EDM and outside the EDM world?
There are a lot of incredible artists out there right now. I really like Porter Robinson, Wolfgang Gartner, Knife Party, and outside EDM I’d say Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and some others. I’m a big fan of deep house, as well, even though I don’t play it often. I love to listen to it when I’m chilling or on the plane. My favorites are Solomun and Maya Jane Coles.
And of course there are guys who are my all-time heroes like the main man Tiesto himself, who supported me a lot and who is the biggest DJ around.
DJ Danny Avila is spinning at Hakkasan Las Vegas on Saturday night before headliners The Bingo Players. Avila can’t drink, but at last he can play bingo.
