An impromptu reverse happy hour trip, one of many over the years, to Republic Kitchen & Bar over the weekend unexpectedly and sadly revealed that the establishment, opened at 9470 S. Eastern Ave. near the 215 in 2010, will be closing today after 3 1/2 years of operation.
Republic was one of my favorite Henderson haunts (yes, it is technically in Las Vegas, but whatever), for happy hour, especially reverse from 10 p.m. (and, recently, 9 p.m.) to closing (about 2 a.m.), and the brunch on weekends also was a top pick because it was a reasonably priced $20 for all-you-can-eat in a casual, calm, comfortable and leisurely environment.
A bartender said that there will be a big blowout bash Saturday with food and drink aplenty to clean out and close Republic.
Minutes later outside, owner Jeff Kovatch told me that they will be focusing on opening a third Greens & Proteins in the Valley and that Taco Taco will replace Republic in the strip mall that recently closed Red Mango and opened Zupas, Smashburger and Novecento Pizzeria.
Republic follows in the footsteps of recent closings by personal favorites Top Notch Barbecue and Hash House a Go Go at the M Resort.
Republic was my “Cheers” — near my house in Henderson and a place where I befriended the owners and employees. And least the delicious fried peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for dessert will live on in dreamland.
