The 55th Annual Grammys Awards may well keep most of the big music stars away from Las Vegas this weekend, but, in their place, we have a medley of dueling chefs, comedy kingpins and brawling rugby players. Thanks, though, to The Who, Rod Stewart, Imagine Dragons, Sammy Hagar and Peter Noone, the music hasn’t died. (And congratulations to Sammy on the third anniversary of his Cabo Wabo Cantina at Planet Hollywood’s Miracle Mile Shops.)
However, tonight’s first Who concert in The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Saturday’s Imagine Dragons’ show are sold out, so you may have to pony up for scalper tickets -- and I don’t approve of those outrageous markups. Rod is doing blockbuster box office at Caesars Palace, and good news this week came when he said he wouldn’t end his two-year run there in April as planned. He’ll be back this summer for eight shows, and it looks as if there will be more dates to come.
Chinese New Year celebrations for the Year of the Snake kick off this weekend, and that’s a deliberate pun to note the USA Sevens International Rugby Tournament and International Fan Festival with 16 global teams competing at our Sam Boyd Stadium. That’s not the only sport on target; we’re pulling a bow and arrow to welcome NFAA World Archery and Trade Show.
Despite losing Super Bowl XLVII in a nail-biter, San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Colin Kaepernick hosts at Haze in Aria. But the most unique brawl of the weekend is the food fight between bad boy Anthony Bourdain and good guy Eric Ripert at the Palms; our preview was posted Thursday. The Palms also is the site for “The Amazing Race” stars Jaymes Vaughan and James Davis from Chippendales at The Rio when they host an Amazing Race slot tournament run at the casino.
For racing of a more mercurial kind, check out Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Gentlemen, it’s time to start your engines and, above the roar of the motors, let me drop the checkered flag and shout, “This week’s edition of the Royal Robin Rundown is green for go!”
