Editor’s Note: As Robin Leach winds down his traditional summer vacation under the Tuscan sun in Italy and heads to the East Coast for a brief visit before returning to the rigors of Vegas DeLuxe, many of our Strip personalities have stepped forward in his absence to pen their own words of wisdom. We continue today with Justin Spencer, fitness enthusiast and founder of The Quad headliners Recycled Percussion. Justin is aiming to launch LegacyX.com, his website featuring motivational advice and health and fitness information, in August.
Many of us wake up every day with a clouded sense of direction. We start our days gearing up for lives we aren’t sure we want to be living. We hustle to ensure that we aren’t late for jobs we don’t enjoy, to see people who pretend to care about us and to work another day fulfilling someone else’s dream.
This is a nails on a chalkboard lifestyle. I am here to reinforce the fact that this lifestyle doesn’t need to exist.
While we think this is our life, it’s not. Nobody is making us get up every day and do this. We are choosing to out of fear, insecurity and lack of confidence in our own abilities to garner more out of ourselves.
I personally had every reason to fail, just like many of you may have. I grew up poor with substance abuse prevalent in my house. I grew up in a small town with little hope of making the kind of life I desired for myself.
We can’t keep waking up every day to live a life that isn’t ours. We need to take control of what we can control, and that’s ourselves.
Take my job with Recycled Percussion as an example. My actual job is performing nightly as a headliner at The Quad, but there is so much more I have to do to prepare for and promote this show.
I am fortunate enough to be able to incorporate some of my passions, like drumming and an active lifestyle, into the show. I also have to put in the time at the gym and concentrate on a healthy overall lifestyle so I can best perform for our fans who come from all over the world to see our performances.
Through hard work, dedication and the determination to never give up, I have been able to make my dream a reality and escape the life my previous surroundings could have led me to; this took great focus. Because it has worked for me, I encourage you to pursue your goals and focus on how you are going to get to where you want to be.
Do me a favor: Today, shut your phone off for 30 minutes and find a place to be alone. Sit in your car or walk to a park. Flush your mind of the life you are currently living. Say to yourself, “If you could scorch Earth, how would you start over? Where would you go?”
Find that thought process that gives you butterflies in your stomach. Find that something that truly makes you smile. That, my friends, is the true you and the answer for which you are looking.
Don’t turn around and say, “Well I can’t do it; it’s impossible.” This is the thought process that’s gotten you into this mess in the first place. We all posses the inner power to change the aspects of our lives we are dissatisfied with; we just need to realize it.
So today (not tomorrow!), try the aforementioned exercise, and I think you will be shocked to meet the real you. I promise that it’s in there somewhere. Find yourself, be yourself, for yourself.
