Sport journalist Jim Brown moderates a discussion with best friends Don Rickles and Bob Newhart appearing onstage together for what they said was the first time in their careers during an appearance at the 2013 AARP Life@50 national convention in the Las Vegas Convention Center on Thursday, May 31, 2013.

Life Is Beautiful

They’re no longer known as the Lingerie Football League, but our Las Vegas Sin are still sexy and powerful. They’re also ready for the new Legends of Football Women of the Gridiron season home opener this month. They return to The Orleans Arena to play against the Green Bay Chill on June 22, and it will be televised on NBC Sports. They then go one week later to L.A. to play the Temptation.

Head coach Jeremiah Captain told me that his team is ready for the matchup against Green Bay: “The Sin are led by veterans quarterback Nikki Johnson (41/73, 384 YDS, 12 TDs, 1 INT in 2012) and wide receiver Cassandra Strickland (9 REC, 131 YDS, 3 TDs in 2012).

“Nikki is an accurate passer who can make any throw on the field. She is very passionate about being a pioneer in women’s football. At age 12, she started the campaign for girls playing flag football in the valley, and that sport has recently become officially sanctioned by high schools for girls in the Las Vegas area.

“Cassie is very big, tall and fast. This Amazon woman is 5’11” and 170 pounds. She comes from a track-and-field background where she tripled jumped. … She also is very active on the defensive side of ball where she plays free safety.

“Rookies Carmen Bourseau (running back) and Kelley Schroeder (WR) have added depth to the offense. Carmen is a big power back that runs downhill but can also turn the corner with her speed. Kelley runs excellent routes and catches anything thrown her way. Both are extremely hard workers, and it reflects in their play. We are confident of a great season and will make Las Vegas proud and urge everybody to come support us June 22.”

RARE BIBLES: An exceptional exhibit with a collection of rare Bibles and related works from the 15th through 19th centuries is opening to the public today through the end of the month at Bauman’s rare book gallery in the Palazzo. Co-founder David Bauman said the works are extraordinarily scarce and valuable. The Aitken Bible, the first complete English Bible printed in America, is valued at $150,000. Also on show, the first Hebrew Bible and a 50-page fragment of the King James Bible carried to the moon on Apollo 14 and on sale for $13,500.

RUNNING CONCIERGE? Westin Hotels wants to hire a first-ever running concierge to look after marathon runners in top American cities including Las Vegas when the Rock ’n’ Roll event is here Nov. 17. The running ambassador will travel to key races and be available at the nearest Westin property to meet with runners, pass on training tips, assist with food and VIP race bib pickup and manage the onsite recovery tent. The job requires accomplished candidates who have completed marathons so they know first-hand the needs of competitors. The job begins next month.

GUEST STAR: Former “Phantom — the Las Vegas Spectacular” star Kristen Hertzenberg will return for four more guest appearances with The Phat Pack at the Downtown Plaza starting Thursday. Kristen played the lead role of Christine Daae.

FIRST TIME: Longtime best friends Bob Newhart and Don Rickles appeared together for the first time in their long-running comedy careers while onstage at the 2013 AARP Life @50 convention here. Contributing photographer Glenn Pinkerton of Las Vegas News Bureau was on duty to capture the legends of comedy interviewed by sports legend and journalist Jim Brown.

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL: The full lineup for October’s inaugural Life Is Beautiful was announced Monday night at Fremont Country Club. I’d be neglectful if I didn’t point out a few of my favorites in this showcase of food, art, music and learning. It’s a talented group to fill 15 Downtown city blocks for two days with 50 bands on two stages, including hometown heroes The Killers and Imagine Dragons.

Chef friends Scott Conant, Jonathan Waxman, Hubert Keller, Cat Cora, Michael Mina, Rick Moonen, Kim Canteenwalla, Tom Colicchio, David Burke, Charlie Palmer, Mary Sue Milliken, Susan Feniger, Paul Bartolotta, Todd English, Kerry Simon, Carla Pellegrino, Andre Rochat, Megan Romano and Mike Minor are among the 60-plus kings and queens of the kitchen setting up stations in a Moroccan-styled bazaar. Additionally, Cirque du Soleil will feature performances from its shows, including the new “Michael Jackson One” at Mandalay Bay.
