Runners and fighters clash with one another on the Strip as UFC 167 superstars Georges St. Pierre and Johny Hendricks battle in a much-anticipated showdown at MGM Grand as 30,000 runners attempt to outpace and outrun one another in the annual Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon along the Strip.
There also is a contingent of dueling comics with Whoopi Goldberg, Frank Caliendo, Tim Allen and Ron White competing with one another for the spotlight this weekend, and they are up against Fox News kingpin Bill O’Reilly, who has a sold-out show in the Colosseum at Caesars Palace with political comedy commentator Dennis Miller.
There’s a wrecking-ball alert out for Miley Cyrus fans: Her 38-city U.S. and Canada tour is set to hit MGM Grand Garden Arena on March 1, and tickets go on sale Saturday morning. A mad stampede is expected for the controversial wardrobe, headline-making “Bangerz” starlet.
There are three “runs” this Marathon weekend: the half marathon and the full 26.2 miles and for the first time the debut of the Zappos.com half of a half. All take place along the Strip starting at 3:30 p.m. Sunday. We posted the stunning statistics behind the races on Thursday.
Other highlights of this merry marathon weekend: Tonight, Santana will be joined onstage for a giant guitar jam with guest Gina Gleason during his headlining show at House of Blues in Mandalay Bay. Gina has won raves and recognition for her explosive lead guitar skills as “The Muse” in Cirque du Soleil’s “Michael Jackson One” just steps away in the Cirque theater.
It’s another big UFC fight weekend, and several legendary fighters will celebrate 20 years of the Octagon with an Ultimate Poker Hall of Fame tournament at Red Rock Resort. Pulling cards instead of punches: Chuck Liddell, Forrest Griffin, Matt Hughes, Ryce Gracie, Bruce Buffer and more. “Any time you put UFC fighters together, there’s going to be some heavy competition,” said Chuck. “It’s in our nature to play to win.”
Meantime, Randy Couture hosts a painting class at the Orleans for Buzz’N Brushes, with proceeds going to his nonprofit Xtreme Couture G.I. Foundation to fulfill unmet needs of America’s armed-forces veterans.
Veteran movie and recording star Debbie Reynolds is still going strong and plays the South Point, while rock fans will hammer away with Nine Inch Nails in concert for two sold-out nights in the Joint the Hard Rock Hotel. One of New York and San Francisco’s beloved, almost cult-followed cabaret pianists, Michael Feinstein, tickles the ivories at Smith Center.
Designer Todd Avery Lenahan will pour the bubbly this weekend when his latest design project, Fizz Las Vegas, a high-end champagne lounge and bar inside Caesars Palace, soft opens this weekend. Sir Elton John’s husband David Furnish is Fizz’s creative director.

The Strip will be closed for the 2013 Rock ’n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon, Half Marathon and Zappos.com Half of the Half starting near Mandalay Bay and Luxor and finishing at the Mirage. Streets near Neon Boulevard will be affected by the closures, so check traffic reports. The Official Rock ’n’ Roll Marathon Pre-Race Brunch is at the Mirage, and the Run-Thru Wedding Ceremony Chapel is set up near the starting line.
