It’s set to be one of the wildest “only in Las Vegas” weekends imaginable: Forget the obvious that I could write about the spoof parody of “50 Shades of Grey” with “Spank! The Musical” at Golden Nugget. Forget the return of the insanity day parties at Lavo in Palazzo and Ghostbar in the Palms.
I’m talking about four geezers who show “The Hangover” boys how to really party like there’s no tomorrow — or at least 1959 — in the new comedy “Last Vegas.” Who would ever expect that Oscar winners Morgan Freeman, Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline would get into more fun, trouble and hijinx than the Wolf Pack of Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha and Ken Jeong?
Call this “The Hangover” AARP version. The veteran silver screen stars with lovely actress Mary Steenburgen in tow will fire up the Bellagio Fountains today, greet Las Vegas VIPs at a pre-premiere screening on the Strip and then host a celebration party at Haze in Aria. The film opens nationwide Nov. 1, and the fun part for us locals is to spot the places and faces we know so well from living here.
Coincidentally, old-timers from pop and rock also collide, with the venerable elder statesman of The Beach Boys, Brian Wilson, and The Yardbirds creator Jeff Beck in concert at Pearl at the Palms, plus, Lou Gramm, founder and original vocalist of Foreigner, joins “Raiding the Rock Vault” at LVH.
Is country king Garth Brooks in his return to the Wynn in this age group, too? How old are Jimmy Buffett and his Coral Reefer Band presenting another session of golden oldies at MGM Grand Garden Arena? (Jimmy turns 67 on Christmas Day.)
Las Vegas shows its generous side, too, this weekend with the celebrity poker tournament hosted by actor and comedian Brad Garrett at MGM Grand; the Foundation for an Independent Tomorrow honors my hospitality head honcho pal Michael Severino at its Carnevale di Notte gala in Paris; Siegfried & Roy invite you to join them at the Metro Police K-9 Trials at Orleans Arena; my British friend, comedy impressionist and singer Jack Walker, headlines an entertainment event with cancer survivors to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Sambalatte in Boca Park; and the Third Annual NF Hope Concert at the Venetian is hosted by resident headliners Human Nature.
Without further ado, it’s time to enter our big top and march through the parade of the old and the young who make up this week’s edition of the Royal Robin Rundown:
