Now that the 2014 Academy of Country Music stars are relocating to Texas —at least until 2016’s anticipated return here — how will the awards show void be filled?
Despite ticket sales rocketing through the roof a year in advance to already near sell-out status at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, home of the Dallas Cowboys just outside Dallas, Las Vegas still has the powerhouses of pop.
Another three-hour TV special looms, this time on ABC for the 2014 Billboard Music Awards on May 18 again at our MGM Grand Garden Arena. Lorde and Imagine Dragons lead with 12 nominations apiece in the 40 categories. Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis follow with 11, 10 and eight, respectively.
Justin could add to his Billboard wins as a solo artist in being nominated as Top Artist and Top 200 Album. Back in 2000 with ’N Sync, he won five Billboard Awards and then three in 2003 as a solo act. Jason Derulo announced the show and the stars on ABC’s “Good Morning America” this morning.
Lorde and Imagine Dragons as the top nominees go head-to-head in nine categories, including Top Hot Artist, Top Rock Artist, Top Song, Top Rock Song and Top Album. Lorde, Robin Thicke, T.I. and Pharrell Williams are all competing in five categories for Top Song, with Katy and Imagine Dragons right behind them in four categories.
Rihanna will be here as a finalist in five categories, plus Miley Cyrus for “Wrecking Ball” and Avicii for “Wake Me Up.” Country will be represented with Luke Bryan leading all six country categories with seven nominations, including as a finalist in Top Male Artist in all genres.
