With World Water Day on the calendar Saturday, it’s time to remember that we live in the desert, and the entire Southwest is affected with serious drought conditions.
Farmers in California are struggling to grow crops, and in far-off lands, despite living in a technological age, villagers often walk 10 miles and more daily to get their supplies of hoped-for clean and safe drinking water.
The urgent mission to protect and save water is never more apparent than at our own Springs Preserve, which, if you have never toured, you must make it a definite visit to learn all about the needs we all have for H2O.
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte has made it his mission with his One Drop organization, and tonight for one night only, 100 artists from his acrobatic circus company will perform the second-annual “One Night for One Drop” spectacular at Mandalay Bay.
Guests include The Tenors, “America’s Best Dance Crew” Season 6 champions IaMmE Crew, In-Q, Lindsey Sterling, Heather McDonald, Blues Traveler, Mary Wilson of The Supremes, William Joseph and Natalie Irish. All eight Cirque shows on the Strip will be closed as a result of tonight’s philanthropic show.
An all-star lineup of entertainers, personalities and Las Vegas VIPs will walk a blue carpet in advance of the show. I interviewed its director Mukthar O.S. Mukthar, who knows first hand the needs of water and the show’s theme of “a land where there is no water.”
Said Guy: “In 2014, there are still at least 780 million people around the world who do not have access to a safe and steady water supply. It is one of our planet’s most urgent problems, but there are sustainable solutions to be had if we focus our efforts and our resources.”
We’ll have reports, photos and video of the glittering gala, show, mega-bucks auction I’ll MC and star-studded after-party at Moorea Beach Club.
COMEDY IS KING: Although the spotlight will be fixed on “One Drop’s” war on water, there’s another battle raging on and off the Strip this weekend. I don’t think I’ve seen so many headline comics in one place other than at a comedy festival. It’s an extraordinary lineup with Jerry Seinfeld, Daniel Tosh, David Spade, Bill Maher, Jo Koy, David Alan Grier and Tommy Davidson, in addition to our resident comics.
Loveable funnyman George Wallace celebrates his 10th anniversary at the Flamingo, and I’m pretty certain that you’ll find Jerry slipping across from Caesars Palace to congratulate his longtime pal. George will host his party first at the new restaurant Chayo in the Linq, followed by his regular 10 p.m. slot in the Donny & Marie Osmond Showroom. “I Be Thinkin’ ” there will be several onstage surprises during his anniversary show.
TIM & FAITH: Country-icon couple Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are getting ready to pull up stakes from their fall, winter and spring run of shows at he Venetian as they set off this summer on a world tour. After this weekend, only one weekend of performances remains — from April 11-12. I’m reliably told they have an open invitation to return for shows whenever they wish.
NIGHTCLUB SHOW: “Bar Rescue” reality TV star Jon Taffer has a busy weekend welcoming more than 35,000 attendees to his largest-ever Nightclub & Bar Convention and Trade Show even though it doesn’t open until Monday. He’s taking over the Bank in Bellagio on Sunday night for a welcome party.
The show starts Monday, with or without hangovers, and on Tuesday as talk-show comedy host Adam Carolla joins Mayor Carolyn Goodman for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, we’ll have a rundown of exhibits and parties.
DAYLIGHT REOPENS: The 2014 spring and summer pool season moves into full swing this weekend as the bigger and better Daylight dayclub at Mandalay Bay throws open its doors. Two VIP pools have been added to serve opposite cabana sections, and enhanced special effects are being readied for the new series of nighttime summer Eclipse concerts.
Now we’re all set to make a splash of our own as we raise awareness for the ultimate comedy clash and other entertainment highlights in our weekly Royal Robin Rundown:
