There are more multimillionaire headliner DJs spinning in our beach clubs, dayclubs and nightclubs for the next 96 hours than there are big-time Hollywood and sports entertainers, and that’s something that could only happen in Las Vegas.
On a weekend that’s got the spotlight turned on hot hit-maker Bruno Mars, the legendary Cher and comedy kings Bill Cosby and Chris Tucker, it’s difficult to believe that they are outshined and outearned by some of the highest-paid spinners of wheels of steel anywhere in the world.
Calvin Harris, the world’s wealthiest DJ in 2013, will be at Hakkasan in MGM Grand, and rich runner-up Tiesto, No. 1 in 2012, does double duty there and at nearby Wet Republic.
Nightlife czar Victor Drai, who has rocked the high-priced DJ world declaring war on their oversized paychecks, tells me that he’s sticking to his guns with the weekend-long opening of his new palace in the sky Drai’s Beach Club and Nightclub at the new boutique hotel the Cromwell.
“The club is the star, not the DJ,” he said.
Last weekend, the Fort Knox-like mountains of money for Las Vegas DJs even became the subject of hysterical satire on “Saturday Night Live” as Andy Samberg lampooned a fictional EDM DJ Davvincii. The send-up clip used a track titled “Get Turned Up to Death” as a parody of DJ Snake’s hit “Turn Down for What” showing the comedy actor playing laptop games and frying eggs while pushing a bass button on the dual decks.
Whatever you might think of the spoof, there’s no getting away from the fact that our Royal Robin Rundown certainly proves we’ve got more million-dollar DJs in town this holiday weekend than we have Hollywood stars.
So let’s press the bass button, adjust the volume and bank the bags of bread as we play our countdown:
