Nine award-winning Broadway musicals make up the 2016/2017 Broadway Season lineup at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Symphony Park. Here’s the Royal Robin Rundown of the Smith Center’s schedule:

“The Sound of Music,” Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016 - Sunday, Aug. 14, 2016

The hills are alive again with a new production of “The Sound of Music” directed by three-time Tony Award winner Jack O’Brien. The beloved musical is the story of Maria and the von Trapp Family with its Tony-, Grammy Award- and Academy Award-winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

“The Sound of Music” enjoyed success as a live production when “The Sound of Music Live!” aired on NBC in December 2013, seen by more than 44 million people and starring Carrie Underwood and Stephen Moyer. The 50th anniversary of the film was celebrated last year. The 1965 movie, with Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, continues to be one of the most successful movie musicals in history and won Best Picture at the 38th Academy Awards.

Critics agree that Carole made more than beautiful music. She wrote the soundtrack to a generation.

The timeless 1954 movie “White Christmas” with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye is adapted for the stage in a lavish new production that The New York Times says to “put on your wish list.” “Irving Berlin’s White Christmas” tells the story of a song-and-dance team putting on a show in a Vermont inn and falling for a sister act in the process. This holiday musical is merry and bright — full of dancing, laughter and some of the greatest songs ever written.

Every once in a while, a Broadway musical comes along that surprises, moves and excites audiences in ways only a truly landmark musical can. The groundbreaking, uplifting and exquisite new musical “Fun Home” was the event of the Broadway season, receiving raves from critics and audiences, winning five 2015 Tonys, including Best Musical, and making history along the way.

Based on Alison Bechdel’s bestselling graphic memoir, “Fun Home” introduces us to Alison at three ages as she explores and unravels the mysteries of childhood. It began as one man’s story, became everyone’s music and is now a Broadway musical. “Motown: The Musical” is the true American Dream story of Motown founder Berry Gordy’s journey from featherweight boxer to heavyweight music mogul who launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson and many more.

Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat. Featuring classics such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” experience the story behind the music in the hit “Motown: The Musical.”

“Finding Neverland,” Tuesday, Feb. 13, 2017 - Sunday, Feb. 19, 2017

“An American in Paris,” Tuesday, April 11, 2017 - Sunday, April 16, 2017

An American in Paris

“An American in Paris” is the new Tony-winning musical about an American soldier, mysterious French girl and indomitable European city each wanting a new beginning post-war. Acclaimed director/choreographer and 2015 Tony winner Christopher Wheeldon brings the magic and romance of Paris into perfect harmony with unforgettable songs from George and Ira Gershwin in a show that earned more awards than any other musical in the 2014-2015 season.

He’s back in Las Vegas after that six-year run at the Venetian. Cameron Mackintosh’s spectacular new production of Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “The Phantom of the Opera” is at the Smith Center as part of a new North American Tour.

Hailed by critics as “bigger and better than ever before,” this production boasts many exciting special effects, including the show’s legendary chandelier, and new scenic and lighting designs, staging and choreography. The beloved story and thrilling score will be performed by a cast and orchestra of 52, making this “Phantom” one of the largest productions now on tour.
