While Gov. Jim Gibbons is ordering dramatic budget cuts to address the state's immediate fiscal problems, who in Nevada is examining the state's long-term health? Who, if anyone, is watching out for the state's long-term future? The Sun invited four prominent Nevadans to discuss who needs to come to the table to discuss Nevada's future.(Full discussion. 1. I wish our Reno Gazette-Journal and Nevada Appeal newspapers would exhibit the kind of multi-media courage that the Sun is engaged in. Good job! These kinds of roundtables are extremely valuable to the power brokers right on down to Walmart workers to begin to appreciate the economic and political atmosphere Nevada finds itself in. It's obvious that big gaming hears footsteps (Jurassic Park anyone?) but will do everything it can to spread the burden and pain as broadly as possible when it comes to raising taxes. However, we must also acknowledge and act appropriately, knowng that big gaming is contributing mightily to the broad and expensive social costs of rapid growth in the state. Equity should be pursued regardless of the yelps of protest we're already getting from big gaming. That's not to exempt other businesses from higher taxes...but when compared to the sheer wealth of the gaming industry (and mining too!), the "ability to pay" should also figure in there somewhere. As for leadership from Governor Gibbons, I wouldn't bet a chicken salad at Denny's on that. However, if leadership doesn't come from others(Raggio, Buckley, et. al.), you can set your watch to the arrival of "California Initiative-itis" with all its attendent dysfunctions. We can either take the wheel, or the mob will. What'll it be ladies and gentlemen?
