For many readers, the 1970s image of Las Vegas became strangely grim after Hunter S. Thompson took "a Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream", in his novel "Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas". Others enjoyed seeing big-name acts like Elvis and Liberace, and though Las Vegas casinos were beginning to go legit, the last mob elements in town were stirring up publicity.
