LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Fair trial is to be expected

Comparing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s decision to hold onto the articles of impeachment to a prosecutor in a long murder trial resting his case and the judge not sending it to the jury is nonsensical.

An impeachment is more like an indictment by a grand jury. After an indictment, trials are frequently delayed while rules are set, witnesses deposed and lawyers prepare.

Also, the idea that elected officials are voting to overturn an election does not accurately describe the issue. The president was impeached for high crimes and misdemeanors. The majority Republican Senate will probably not convict him, but voters need to hear the facts in an impartial trial prior to the 2020 election.
