LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

GOP needs a few good senators

Sitting through the first day of President Donald Trump’s impeachment trial, I was reminded of Jack Nicholson’s iconic line in the movie “A Few Good Men: “You can’t handle the truth.” That courtroom drama bears many similarities to what is going on in the Senate. It’s about a coverup, protecting a corrupt officer, and the tribunal’s rules and procedures that hinder the attorneys from making their case.

Watching Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues vote down requests for documents and witnesses relevant to the president’s behavior illustrates how far they will go to prevent the truth from coming out.

It breaks my heart that, under the guise of a procedural motion to table, there was not one person on the right side of the aisle who saw this as a means to suppress the truth. Are they afraid of what the documents the White House has withheld might show?Wouldn’t testimony from the likes of John Bolton and Mick Mulvaney give clarity to the president’s actions with regards to Ukraine?

How can anyone who swore an oath of impartiality rule on the case without hearing or seeing all facts available.

It appears the president and his enablers in the Senate can’t handle the truth and will do everything in their power to keep it from ever seeing the light of day.
