LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

This has been a year for the ages

2020 will go down as a year to forget and one that cannot be forgotten.

It highlighted our greatest strengths and magnified our greatest weaknesses. It introduced an enemy we could not see and prejudices we could.

2020 was when the United States needed to come together, and yet it has never been more divided. We longed to roll the calendar back and have a chance to start all over, and at the same time wanted to fast-forward and call it like a football game in which no one wins. Yet, there were winners.

Science took a giant leap forward using untested technologies to create vaccines in record time — technology that will define the future of fighting diseases. Families learned what it was like again to eat dinner together, walk together and learn together. Offices that seemed indispensable were vacated and people learned to smile with their eyes. We were indelibly changed for better or worse. We became more vulnerable and yet stronger. We learned to love more and hate more.
