LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Senate structure is intentional

In response to New York Times columnist Paul Krugman’s Oct. 21 column “How the Republican Party can still wreck America”:

Krugman complained that in the U.S. Senate, Wyoming voters have 70 times the weight as the average voter in California, making the Senate a “deeply” unrepresentative body. This is true but I strongly disagree with Krugman’s premise.

The framers of the Constitution specifically designed the Senate this way so that large states don’t control the whole country. We are a representative republic, not a pure democracy, thank goodness.

During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, the framers wisely recognized this. They demanded state sovereignty, otherwise the three largest states would dominate the 10 smaller states, and our grand American constitutional experiment would have failed.
