The writer of the Nov. 21 letter “Rodgers was unfairly mocked,” criticizing Sun cartoonist Mike Smith’s depiction of Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, writes: “We should all be entitled to our opinions without fear of retribution or ridicule.”
One’s opinion is open to ridicule if it is something as stupid and dangerous as not getting the vaccine for some conspiracy theory. Rodgers’ actions endangered his teammates and he was irresponsible in not informing them of his decision to not be vaccinated or wear a mask.
Anytime someone expresses an opinion that is unacceptable in our world, such as racism, misogyny, homophobia, ageism, spreading false information about COVID-19, etc., that person should expect to be condemned for it.
As far as retribution, the Las Vegas Raiders were right in firing coach Jon Gruden for his racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments in emails, as anyone else in a position like his should be. You can also expect criticism if you show a lack of morals or empathy.
There may be free speech in America, but you are still responsible for your words.
