Many people who worry about how the United States’ international actions affect how the rest of the world views us ignore what our internal problems show to the world. More recently, the response to COVID-19 has done nothing to instill faith in the ability of the United States.
We have access to outstanding medical care and facilities. Yet, COVID-19 shows us to be a Third World country rather than a world leader. Total deaths in the United States — 2,000 per 100,000 people — are four times the rate for the rest of the world. Today, the United States is doing worse and dying at a rate seven times the rate of the rest of the world.
How could anyone expect international respect when leaders of a major party have put politics ahead of pandemic control, treat an insurrection as little more than patriots touring the Capitol, and contest results of a fair election without evidence? Such a country can never have international respect freely given.
