Demarcus Robinson, Vernon Butler among Raiders’ first five roster cuts

2022 July 27: Raiders Training Camp

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Demarcus Robinson talks with reporters during training camp at the Las Vegas Raiders Headquarters/Intermountain Healthcare Performance Center in Henderson Wednesday, July 27, 2022.

The Raiders made the NFL-mandated cuts to get their roster down from 90 to 85 players Tuesday afternoon, and a couple veterans who came into training camp expected to make the team were among the casualties.

Wide receiver Demarcus Robinson and defensive tackle Vernon Butler headlined the group of five players who will no longer be with the team when they resume training camp Wednesday morning in Henderson.

Robinson came to Las Vegas this offseason after six years with the Kansas City Chiefs with a chance to claim a wide-open No. 3 wide receiver slot. He quickly fell behind teammates Mack Hollins and Keelan Cole in the competition, however, and was also outshined by receivers perceived to be further down the roster including Tyron Johnson, D.J. Turner and Justin Hall.

Robinson had two catches for 28 yards in the Raiders’ 26-20 preseason win over the Vikings Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to keep him on the roster.

Butler, a former first round pick who’s spent six years in the league between the Carolina Panthers and Buffalo Bills, made less of an impact with the Raiders. He missed some practices with an injury early in training camp and never broke into a defensive-tackle rotation that’s included other free-agent signings Andrew Billings, Kyle Peko and Tyler Lancaster.

The Raiders also cut ties with cornerback Nate Brooks, defensive end Gerri Green and tackle Tyrone Wheatley Jr. Both Green and Wheatley saw extended action against the Vikings, but must not have put enough on film for coach Josh McDaniels and his staff to keep them around any longer.

The Raiders, and the rest of the teams in the NFL, must cut down to an 80-man roster next Tuesday before the final 53-man squad becomes official on August 30. Las Vegas travels to play Miami in its next preseason game at 4 p.m. on Saturday.
