LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Abortion fears are overinflated

The June 25 story “Abortion rights activist fears return to back-alley procedures” demonstrates how progressives are obsessed with clumsily dealing with issues that were problems in the early and mid-20th century.

The idea that there could be “back alley” or “coat hanger” abortions as a result of the recent Supreme Court decision is ridiculous. Making abortion somewhat more difficult to obtain doesn’t present the potential hardship that outright prohibition actually had three or four generations ago. Consider the following differences:

• Effective, practical contraception is easily available.

• Social disapproval of out-of-wedlock pregnancies used to be considerable and had an immediate and future negative impact on a woman and her child. There isn’t much stigma anymore.

• Women are more independent, and quite capable financially and socially of getting by on their own if necessary.
