LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Diets speak to our humanity

Pamela Paul’s column, “Keep your politics out of my salad,” published Jan. 23 in the Sun, highlighted the tendency to politicize everything these days, which has gotten truly tiresome.

We don’t need to belong to any particular party in order to exercise common sense or compassion, especially with regard to our dietary choices.

While we can no longer claim ignorance that consuming animal products has disturbing implications on our health, our environment, the depletion of our natural resources and the massive suffering of billions of animals — especially at a time when we have so many other options — the choice about what we eat not tied to politics. It’s tied to our personal sense of empathy, and our desire to choose on the right side of humanity.

And for those who opposed vaccines due to health concerns, I wonder if they’re equally concerned about the assorted drugs they ingest every day when they consume animal products that are loaded with antibiotics, pesticides, hormones, nitrates, nitrites and other drugs.

We don’t need to identify with any party to make wise choices.
