Originally posted on June 22, 2008 at 11:01 p.m.

George Carlin, the irascible, cerebral comic whose drugs-and-dirty-words routines were a fixture at Vegas showrooms for decades, has died of heart failure at the age of 71, the Los Angeles Times reports. Carlin lived in the Los Angeles beach suburb of Venice.

Las Vegas Sun reporter Jerry Fink interviewed Carlin on June 10 and last August. Fink will remember Carlin in Tuesday's Las Vegas Sun.

The New York Times now has an in depth piece on Carlin's career.
