Jacques Streeter had a chance to bury UCLA in regulation, but he helped Cal State Fullerton finally put the Bruins away in the second overtime Monday night.
A former Findlay College Prep point guard, Streeter hit the first of two free-throw attempts with 12.7 seconds remaining in double OT to give the Titans a 68-65 lead.
When a 3-pointer by UCLA missed the mark, CSUF grabbed the rebound and an epic victory.
It was the first time in 10 games that the Titans (2-0) beat the Bruins, and it came in UCLA’s season opener at Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.
So the victory had special meaning for Streeter, a Los Angeles native who helped Findlay get to the National Prep Championship finale two seasons ago in the Bronx, N.Y.
The Pilots lost that game, by a point, to Hargrave Military Academy.
As a freshman last season at CSUF, Streeter averaged 10.4 points and 4.4 assists for the 15-17 Titans. Monday night, he had 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and no turnovers.
With 9.5 seconds left in regulation and CSUF trailing 57-56, Streeter stepped to the line after getting fouled on a drive to the basket. He made the first free throw but missed the second to force overtime.
The 6-foot sparkplug hit two free throws halfway through the first extra session for a 60-57 advantage, but it went to a second overtime.
With 2:17 left, he hit a deep 3-point shot beyond the top of the key for a 65-60 lead. A couple of minutes later, Streeter hit a free throw that forced the Bruins to take a desperation 3-pointer to tie it.
When it didn’t fall, UCLA had its first loss to an unranked, non-conference foe in 38 games.
