Kevin Soares, who is widely considered the best high school basketball coach in Southern Nevada, stepped down from his post at Foothill High School at the end of the school year.
Soares had coached the Falcons since the Henderson school opened in 1999, leading them to the 2004 and 2008 Sunrise Regional championship. In 2004, they reached the state title game.
Soares said he was wavering on leaving the past few seasons. Once Foothill was eliminated from the playoffs last February, he “knew his time was done.”
He was believed to be the longest tenured coach in the state, staying at Foothill for 19 seasons and regularly winning more than 20 games a year. He officially stepped down in May.
“I was the grand-daddy of the group,” he said.
Soares will continue teaching at Foothill and coaching the school’s cross-country team.
Paul Desantis is the new Foothill basketball coach, Soares said.
