Green Valley Library celebrates grand opening

Green Valley Library

Henderson residents have a new full-service library in the Green Valley area. You may be thinking, “I never saw anything under construction.”

This is true, because the Green Valley Library, located at the corner of Green Valley Parkway and Sunset Road, has been there for quite some time but did not belong to the Henderson District Public Libraries until recently.

Once part of the Las Vegas Clark County Library District, the Green Valley Library has now been incorporated into the Henderson District. After this incorporation, the Green Valley Library closed on December 23, 2008, for renovations. The library is open for business this week, and a grand opening is set for Saturday.

“We have amazing new selection of books, DVDs, CDs, and audiobooks. The DVD and CD collections, in particular, are exceptionally nice. The majority of our collection is brand new,” says Albert Smedley, reference specialist.

And just as each one of our libraries has something special to set it apart from the others — Gibson’s Nevada Room, Paseo Verde’s Heritage Room — the Green Valley Library offers something unique as well.

“Unlike the other branches, Green Valley has its own designated room as a computer lab with 30 public-use computers, as well as children’s computers and other computers throughout the building,” Smedley says. “Full Internet access, black-and-white and color printing, and Wi-Fi will all be available. We also have meeting/study rooms that can be reserved up to two weeks in advance.”

Computer classes, some in Spanish, are forming and can be registered for by clicking here.

Other events in May include a Japanese program for teens/children, a Teen Advisory Group meeting, resume creating class, library research database class, teen book club meeting #1, and a classic book club first meeting.

The grand opening on Saturday will include events such as the ribbon-cutting at 11:30 a.m., a performance by John Earl and the Boogieman Band, a lecture by local attorney Bob Massi, children’s story time and a computer class. The event is free and open to the public.

Regular hours of the Green Valley Library are Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday. All Henderson libraries are closed on Sundays.
