- Gladys Knight, Claire Sinclair
Less than two weeks after Tropicana announced Gladys Knight’s engagement at the Gladys Knight Theater would be extended through the end of the year comes word today that her show instead will close Oct. 29.
Noted on the entertainment link on the Tropicana’s official Web site is that Knight’s final performance will be Oct. 29. The decision comes unexpectedly, as the hotel on Sept. 9 announced her “A Mic and a Light” showcase had been extended through the end of the year.
No official reason has yet been provided as to the abrupt change in plans at what was for decades known as Tiffany Theater but was renamed for Knight when her residency was announced in March. Knight does have a busy performance schedule outside of Las Vegas, but her performance plans did not prevent her and the hotel from announcing on Sept. 9 she would remain at the Trop through the end of December.
Tropicana spokesman Fred Harmon said Knight will be missed as a headliner, saying in an e-mail statement: “We have really enjoyed having Gladys as part of our family and wish her the same success she has enjoyed here at Tropicana Las Vegas out on her tour dates. We look forward to having her back performing whenever she looks to perform in Las Vegas again.”
No headliner to fill Knight’s open dates has yet been announced. Returning for an afternoon slot is Recycled Percussion, which is scheduled to begin a run Oct. 4. Knight’s show is the second significant entertainment option this month to announce it is closing at the Trop; The Mob Experience has shut down most of its operations for an overhaul that officials say won’t be completed until January.
