Council members honor judge; lobby for position

In the outdoor atrium of Las Vegas City Hall, City Council members Friday mingled with family, friends and colleagues of Toy Gregory, following a tribute in the council chambers.

Gregory, who served on the Las Vegas Municipal Court bench for 24 years, suffered a heart attack Dec. 28 and died Jan. 3.

But there was more to the glad-handing than simple well-wishing. A courtroom insider said lobbying began within days of Gregory’s passing by those who want Gregory’s job.

The City Hall tribute gave some an opportunity to show their faces to City Council members who must appoint a replacement for Gregory within the next few weeks. The interim judge will serve until an election in 2009.
