Vegas Play of the Day: Detroit Tigers at Oakland

Here’s the latest installment of the Play of the Day, which uses odds from the South Point. Our three sports writers started with a $10,000 bankroll — fictional, of course.

Detroit Tigers (+120) at Oakland A’s, $500 to win $600: Oakland returns home after a nine-game road trip, including being swept in a three-game series at Toronto over the weekend. Teams in their first game home after a long trip, especially traveling across multiple time zones, always struggle. I’ve used this theory before: Players are happy to see family and comfortable from sleeping in their own beds, becoming so relaxed they don’t play well initially.

Oakland starter Tommy Milone has been better of late, but he still hasn’t earned my trust. He’s lucky to still be in the rotation.

Detroit, despite struggling over the weekend against the Rangers, has one of the better teams in baseball. Last year they resembled a beer-league softball team in relying heavily on the home run. This year, first-year manager Brad Ausmus has them stealing bases and finding other ways to produce runs. That’s the perfect strategy to win a low-scoring game at Oakland.

Standings: Bern (27-18-1, $11,900), Keefer (22-26, $8,288), Brewer (18-25-3, $5,390)
