Memphis Grizzlies forward Matt Barnes warms up before an NBA basketball preseason game against the Houston Rockets Tuesday, Oct. 6, 2015, in Memphis, Tenn.

We've reset the Play of the Day with fresh bankrolls and turned it into a yearly competition. Our three sports writers have re-started with $10,000 bankrolls to continue using on odds from the South Point.

Memphis Grizzlies plus-8 at Los Angeles Clippers: $880 to win $800

My last two Play of the Days have gotten rained out, severely hampering my desperate attempt to make things interesting down the stretch with our leader. Luckily, tonight I’m heading indoors, where one team has a clear motivational edge over the other.

This point spread is staying in a reasonable range because the Clippers don’t plan on resting their starters. That doesn’t mean they’re going to be playing with a relentless intensity.

The Clippers are locked into the Western Conference’s No. 4 seed in the playoffs regardless, while the Grizzlies could fall all the way down to the No. 7 or No. 8. They’re determined not to get paired with the Warriors or Spurs in the first round, meaning they’ll treat this game like a playoff matchup.

Memphis plays at Golden State on Wednesday night when it will be an even more significant underdog, which further illuminates the importance of tonight’s game. The Grizzlies are so banged up, they aren’t half the team they were earlier in the season. But they’ve stayed competitive by playing with a fierce energy that will be on display at the Staples Center.
