Vegas Play of the Day: Miami Marlins at Chicago Cubs

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Miami Marlins Even money at Chicago Cubs: $330 to win $330

Neither the opponent nor the location really matters. If Jose Fernandez is an underdog, I’m interested.

The strikeout master is teetering on that today in Chicago, where he’s worth backing. Fernandez starts against Jason Hammel, who should put little fear into bettors.

The Cubs certainly could be the best team in baseball, but profiting from sports betting can be futile if a bettor is not willing to stand up against a giant when the opportunity is right. The Marlins are no pushover.

They hold the final wild card spot at the moment and look determined to advance to the postseason, even if the betting market doesn’t seem particularly high on them. Miami has proven gamblers wrong all season as the most profitable team to bet on in the National League.

Today’s game opened as a pick’em, minus-110 on both sides, before the money came in on Chicago. I’m not as quick to want to go against Fernandez.

Current Standings: Keefer (5-2, $10,750), Brewer (2-5, $8,375), Bern (1-5, $8,350)
