Vegas Play of the Day: Rangers at Canadiens

Canadiens vs. Rangers

Seth Wenig / AP

New York Rangers’ Benoit Pouliot, center, commits a high sticking penalty against Montreal Canadiens’ Alexei Emelin, right, while Thomas Vanek chases the puck during the first period of Game 4 of the NHL hockey Stanley Cup playoffs Eastern Conference finals, Sunday, May 25, 2014, in New York.

We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

Montreal Canadiens minus-150 vs. New York Rangers: $900 to win $600

The NHL’s second season has arrived, and so begins the most grueling tournament in all of sports — the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Unfortunately for the New York Rangers, they drew the Montreal Canadiens in the first round, where they will face goaltender Carey Price.

Price has owned the Rangers, going 7-0 against them since 2014 with a goals against average of only 1.28 over that span. This year, the Canadiens beat New York in all three meetings, so I think the home team should be a much more sizable favorite.

Montreal has struggled to find the net at times during the regular season, but its style of play is built for the postseason. With strong goaltending, solid defense and a good power play, Montreal could be playing well into June. The Canadiens will need Max Pacioretty to score goals if they want to make a run at the Stanley Cup finals but in this series, the defense — and Price — should be enough.

I’ll gladly lay the minus-150 with the Canadiens in what should be a great atmosphere in the Bell Centre.

Current Standings: Grimala (6-10, $8,425), Keefer (41-35-3, $8,307), Brewer (28-28-1, $7,385), Granger (13-17-1, $6,677)
