Vegas Play of the Day: Pro Bowl

We’ve entered the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

NFL Pro Bowl under-79, $330 to win $300:

The Pro Bowl has gone back to its original AFC versus NFC format this year in Orlando, and tickets to the game sold out. Betting on sports in general is tough. Betting on an exhibition football game between the third and fourth choices at each position because the first choices had something better to do is even tougher.

The players are far more concerned with staying healthy heading into the long offseason than winning the game, which usually leads to high scores, hence the 79-point total. But in the past three years, the Pro Bowl has yet to hit 79 points, with an average total of only 59.6 points. Last year’s game came close with 76, but three years ago only 43 points were scored.

I don’t expect this to be a defensive struggle by any means, but with originally selected quarterbacks Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger, Derek Carr, Matt Ryan and Aaron Rodgers skipping out for a multitude of reasons, the offenses won’t have the firepower they normally do.

Even for a Pro Bowl, 79 is a lot of points to score in an NFL game, so I’ll take the under.

Current Standings: Keefer (36-25-2, $11,561), Brewer (22-20-1, $9,585), Grimala (4-4, $9,550), Granger (8-10, $7,100)
