Vegas Play of the Day: Yankees at Red Sox

New York Yankees’ Didi Gregorius follows through on an RBI single in front of Boston Red Sox’s Christian Vazquez during the 16th inning of a baseball game in Boston, Saturday, July 15, 2017. The Yankees won 4-1.

We’ve entered the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-2016 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

New York Yankees at Boston Red Sox over 8.5: $440 to win $400

I understand why the line is so low in this one despite the Yankees and Red Sox being two of the best hitting teams in the American League through the first half of the season. By the time the two face off tonight the hitters will be tired and the bats will be slow, thanks to a 16-inning marathon Saturday night followed by a double-header today.

While the situation points to the under, I will trust these lineups and doubt these pitchers that have struggled as of late. Masahiro Tanaka is one of the coldest pitchers in the league right now with a 7-8 record and 5.47 earned runs average. Tanaka got off to a terrible start to the season, losing four straight and five of six, but then seemed to right the ship with three straight wins. That disappeared in his last outing when the Brewers belted in five runs in only four innings on Tanaka.

David Price is getting the start for Boston and he’s actually been playing better lately, not having given up more than three runs in a game since June 8. The last time he did, was against the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers battered Price with eight hits and six runs in only five innings to win 9-1.

The Yankees rank third in runs scored with 485 and eighth in batting average with .261, and the Red Sox rank 10th and third respectively. I’ll trust these offenses to perform even after 25 innings in the last 24 hours.

Current Standings: Granger (3-1, $11,062), Keefer (2-1, $10,429), Brewer (2-2, $10,000), Grimala (0-1, $9,500)
