Vegas Play of the Day: Braves at Marlins

We’re entering the third season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won the 2015-2016 season, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015. Bern stepped away in the middle of the 2016-2017 season with a 16-12 record and $13,317 bankroll, with Mike Grimala taking his place.

Miami Marlins minus-120 vs. Atlanta Braves: $600 to win $500 : Atlanta starter Julio Teheran has lost his last two starts and enters with a 4.69 earned run average. In his most recent start, Teheran surrendered nine hits (including two home runs) in just five innings.

More important, he has 30 strikeouts and 20 walks in 40 innings pitched — an awful strikeout-to-walk ratio, especially for a pitcher who is supposed to be Atlanta’s ace.

Miami has lost six of its last seven games, which is alarming for Marlins’ backers at the betting window. However, one of my rules in handicapping baseball is to always bet the home team on a Saturday. Saturday, you see, is when ballparks are usually crowded. Miami should give extra effort, especially against an Atlanta team it’s evenly matched against.

Grimala (9-13, $8,753), Granger (15-19-1, $8,667), Brewer (31-30-1, $8,025), Keefer (43-39-3, $7,180)
