Vegas Play of the Day: Kent State at Western Michigan

We’re entering the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-2016 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Western Michigan minus-21.5 vs. Kent State, $660 to win $600: Kent State ranks near the bottom of college football in points per game (12) and passing yards per game (105). It also ranks low in points allowed (34). That combination of poor play helps explain why it has been outscored 92-19 in the past two games.

Two-win Kent State is playing out its schedule. Western Michigan (5-4) needs a win to become bowl eligible, especially since its final two games are against Northern Illinois and Toledo — the Mid-American Conference’s top teams — on the road.

Western Michigan ranks 17th nationally in rushing at 244 yards per game, but recently lost running backs Jamauri Bogan and Davon Tucker for the season to injury. While that’s not ideal for a team favored to cover by three touchdowns, Western Michigan’s rushing scheme is advanced enough to still have success against a weak Kent State squad.

Current Standings: Granger (9-8, $12,075), Keefer (12-12-1, $9,641), Brewer (12-12, $8,870), Grimala (6-7, $8,555).
