Vegas Play of the Day: Falcons at Patriots

Super Bowl 51

We’ve entered the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-2016 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

New England Patriots minus-3 vs. Atlanta Falcons: $550 to win $500

The Super Bowl rematch was one of the most anticipated matchups of the entire season when the schedules were released, but it has lost some of its shine after relatively disappointing starts to this season for both teams.

The Falcons squeaked by in their first three wins, including a controversial ending in their win over Detroit, and have looked nothing short of awful since. The loss to the Bills is explainable, as Buffalo has been better than expected, but last week’s 20-17 defeat at the hands of the Dolphins is inexcusable for Atlanta.

The Patriots were blown out by Kansas City on opening night, but have played better since. Tom Brady has played exceptional -- he’s second in the league in passing yards and third in touchdown passes -- but New England’s defense is one of the worst in the NFL.

Neither team has impressed to this point, but the Patriots rarely lose at Gillette Stadium so I’ll lay the field goal with New England.

Current Standings: Granger (7-7, $11,475), Keefer (11-9-1, $10,341), Brewer (12-11, $9,530), Grimala (5-6, $8,715)
