Vegas Play of the Day: Diamondbacks at Padres

Goldschmidt hurt

Arizona Diamondbacks’ Paul Goldschmidt, left, shows first base coach Dave McKay where he was hit by a pitch during the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, Aug. 1, 2014, in Phoenix. The Pirates defeated the Diamondbacks 9-4.

We’ve entered the fourth season of the annual South Point-lined Play of the Day competition, effective July 1.

Starting bankrolls have reset to $10,000, with the maximum bet being to win $1,000 and the minimum wager $300. Ray Brewer won back-to-back titles in the 2015-2016 and 2016-17 seasons, after Taylor Bern prevailed in 2014-2015.

Arizona Diamondbacks -140 at San Diego Padres: $700 to win $500:

September baseball can get complicated, with pennant races, spoilers and expanded rosters conspiring to make games 140 through 162 look unfamiliar. But this game looks simple, from a betting perspective.

Diamondbacks starter Robbie Ray has been unhittable since returning from the disabled list a month ago. He's 5-0 in five starts, with a 1.39 ERA and 55 strikeouts in 32.1 innings. He's struck out 10 or more batters in four consecutive games, including a Sept. 10 win over the Padres in which he fanned 12 in 6.0 innings.

I don't think San Diego is going to fare much better this time around. If Arizona can score just two or three runs, Ray is pretty much a lock to win this game.

Current Standings: Keefer (9-4-1, $12,085), Granger (6-6, $11,595), Grimala (3-3, $9,995), Brewer (7-8, $8,710)
