Vegas Play of the Day: Red Sox at Blue Jays

The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now underway, effective July 1.

Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.

Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.

Boston Red Sox minus-105 at Toronto Blue Jays: $420 to win $400

It’s not often you get the best team in the MLB at virtually even money, but Drew Pomeranz has been so bad on the mound that’s what the Red Sox are today as they visit the Blue Jays in Toronto.

Pomeranz sports an awful 1-5 record with a 6.65 earned runs average and has yet to make it past the sixth inning this season. Having said that, the Blue Jays’ starter Marcus Stroman hasn’t been much better. Toronto has lost Stroman’s last two starts by a combined score of 9-0 and in his only start against Boston this season he lost 5-2.

It could be a bad spot for Boston, coming off a four-game sweep of their rival New York Yankees, but an outstanding record of 37-19 away from home helps quell some reservations. The only team with a better road record this season than the Red Sox are the defending champion Astros.

Current Standings: Keefer (5-2, $10,908), Granger (3-0, $10,455), Grimala (4-2, $10,200), Brewer (2-4, $8,240)
