The fifth season of the annual Play of the Day betting competition between the Sun’s sports staff is now under way, effective July 1.
Bankrolls start at $10,000 for each of the four participants, with the objective to increase it as much as possible over the next year. The minimum daily wager is $300, with a $200 penalty assessed for failing to place a bet on an assigned day.
Past winners are Case Keefer in 2017-2018, Ray Brewer in 2016-2017 and 2015-2016, and Taylor Bern in 2014-2015.
Colorado State minus-14 vs. Hawaii: $440 to win $400
It’s going to be a long season for Hawaii. The Warriors were in the nation’s bottom five or 10 teams last year with a 3-9 straight-up season where they were outscored by an average of more than 11 points per game.
It could get even worse this year after a slew of players ditched the program prematurely through transfers. Hawaii hasn’t named a starting quarterback and will be breaking in freshmen at several other spots on the field.
Colorado State has a lot more going for it. The Rams actually welcomed transfers, which should boost a team that returned a decent amount of production.
Colorado State underachieved last year, which has stock on it slightly down going into this year. But the Rams couldn’t have asked for a better opener to gain their bearings and come away with some confidence.
The first official Football Bowl Subdivision game of the year might not be pretty.
Current Standings: Keefer (8-3, $11,608), Grimala 6-2, $10,800), Granger (4-0, $10,255), Brewer (3-5, $8,000)
